History of Tarot Cards
Where and when Tarot started is a mystery. The earliest proof of Tarot cards being used is from the fifteenth century as a popular card game. Some of the beautiful Tarot decks created then are still around. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the cards were discovered and used by a number of scholars of the occult who realised that the cards were much more powerful than just a card game. The cards have since then been created or changed by connections to the Kabbalah, Egyptian mysteries, Hermetic philosophy and secret societies such as the Order of the Golden Dawn into what it is today.

Even though it is certainly not the most attractive of Tarot cards the Rider-Waite deck is the most recommended deck to start out with if you are new to Tarot. The basic meaning of the cards are the same regardless of what deck you are using, however, the specific images and language used on a deck can be more or less useful depending what type of reading you are doing. For example, many people find the Renaissance Tarot particularly good at questions of passion, mastery, and reason.
