There are a lot of people who view the subject of psychic abilities a highly controversial. It requires believing that we are more than mere physical bodies. In addition, it necessitates the belief that we are in fact, spiritual beings. It would appear then, that as spirits we are in some way limited in what experiences we can have on the purely spiritual level. To offset this limitation, we need to enter into a physical form to facilitate our spiritual growth.

That’s a lot to believe considering the lack of empirical evidence. Yet millions of people worldwide admit to believing some version of this philosophy. The majority of the world religions postulate a very similar point of view. The Jewish and Christian belief systems both refer to this non-physical part of the human being as a “soul” or spirit. Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Taoism, Hindu etc. all see the physical body as something temporary and non-essential.

The New Age crowd also rejects the idea that we are just physical bodies. So it does seem that most people do support a belief that we are more than a mere self-conscious, physical machine.

This brings up the question “why do so many people believe there’s more to us than just physical bodies?” Could we possibly just “know” this subconsciously? Plato (the Greek Philosopher) had an interesting idea on the subject. He called it the “Transmigration of Souls”. In this theory he says that we are in fact spirits who come from some sort of spiritual existence prior to our being born. The traumatic experience of birth makes us forget our true nature. Through lifes’ experiences then, we are able to learn and grow in a way that is impossible on the spiritual level alone. It also seems to suggest that we may in fact choose to experience life on earth as a physical being many times, so as to enhance our personal development.

As outlandish as this may sound, there may be some evidence to support the idea. There have been many reports of little children describing people, places and experiences they’ve never encountered in their short lifetime. It’s even been experienced by adults under hypnosis!

Several books by top-selling author Michael Newton — who is an accomplished hypnotist — present hundreds of case studies that tend to support this phenomenon. Hypnotized people don’t make up stories, they just report the facts — regardless of their implications. This can sometimes lead to conflicts between what they experience under hypnosis, and their religious belief systems.

Another thing that must be considered when questioning the validity of psychic abilities, is energy. “Everything is energy and energy is everything” says David Morehouse in his writings about Remote Viewing. Literally everything we experience, including our thoughts, is composed of energy. Solid matter is an illusion created by very dense fields of energy. This is scientific fact, and it must be taken into consideration when investigating the possibility of psychic abilities.

Psychic abilities are supposedly based on an interaction between two peoples’ energies. This is said to occure on the non-physical or energy level. So what the electron microscope reveals to the physicist in a lab today, and what the “seers” of long ago saw with their mind, is a remarkable world composed of 100% energy. It appears that our scientific world is melding with old-time spirituality, and they’re both looking at an identical reality!

So it seems like it’s not all that difficult to conclude that there’s more to what we call “reality” than what we can experience with our senses. We believe in many things we can’t physically see, such as radio waves, microwaves and so on. We use them every day. I seriously doubt that these are the only unseen forces existing in our big universe.

The purpose of this article is to make people think. It’s not designed to convince you of anything. But the issue of psychic abilities is not a simple one that can simply be written off as mumbo jumbo. Believe in it or don’t believe in it, the choice is yours. But at least engage in some appropriate research before deciding.
